The Middle East’s largest defence and security exhibition takes place early next year. Here’s why all eyes will be on the United Arab Emirates this February.

The first quarter of next year sees the 10th edition of the largest tri-service defence and security event in the Middle East and North Africa region take place in Abu Dhabi. The International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) 2011 will feature over 900 international manufacturers and suppliers showcasing their latest defence technology, systems and equipment at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on 20 – 24 February 2011.

Since its inaugural event in 1993, the popularity of IDEX has continued to rise. Established as a globally recognised tri-service defence exhibition held biennially in the United Arab Emirates’ capital city, year-on-year, the exhibition attracts a growing number of international and key military and government representatives. The event facilitates manufacturers and suppliers of defence and security technology in securing contacts and contracts within the Middle East and surrounding regions.

“We have seen IDEX grow from strength to strength since its inauguration some 17 years ago. 2011 will be our largest yet, as decision makers from all over the world come to investigate the very latest in defence and security technology.” said Mohamed Al Mashgouni, IDEX 2011 Show Director.

The previous edition of IDEX took place in 2009, during a period in which a substantial number of nations were in recession. Nevertheless, the exhibition enjoyed one of its most successful runs to date, occupying 108,000 square metres (gross) of event space including exhibition stands, outdoor displays and live demonstration areas. Officials announced 50,000 attendees to IDEX 2009, including 150 official delegations that attended the official opening ceremony and participated in tours of the exhibition. Attendees came from 97 different countries with 52% coming from the UAE; 5% from the USA; 4% from the UK and 3.5% from Saudi Arabia.

In 2009, IDEX saw contracts worth billions of dollars signed between ¬exhibitors and governments from numerous countries, with the UAE Armed Forces announcing deals worth over US$ 5Bn. Investment from the UAE in land defence systems reached over US$ 830M, with major deals for Euro-Art International (US$ 243M), Signal Systems (US$ 42.7M), Rheimentall Defence Electronics of Germany (US$ 177.2M), Patria of Finland (US$ 55.8M), General Dynamics of Canada (US$ 30.5M), Local Advanced Integrated Systems Company (US$ 117.8M ) and Thales of France (US$ 55.8M).

With economic data suggesting that most nations have entered a recovery phase, IDEX 2011 remains a regional event that is in high demand. In fact, it is expected that the 2011 edition will surpass all records of signed contracts secured at previous shows.

According to Jane's Defence, a 20% increase in GCC defence spending is expected from 2010 to 2014 (from US$ 52.4Bn to US$ 62.9Bn). Proportionally the strongest growth will be in the UAE and Kuwait, with a 23% increase expected in defence spends for both countries. Strong economic growth, continuing regional security concerns and the desire to develop indigenous capabilities through the use of offset are the driving factors behind such strong growth projections.

Regular IDEX attendees such as India, China and the GCC nations are expected to become increasingly important consumers for advance land defence systems. These nations are increasing defence budgets to modernise their ground forces particularly in key areas such as armoured vehicles, battle tanks, anti-armour and anti-air missile system and are promising to be the fastest growing markets among emerging economies.

The 900+ exhibitors who are expected at IDEX 2011 will represent over 50 countries from around the world. 31 country pavilions have confirmed their participation at the 2011 anniversary edition.

So who can we expect to see there and what will these exhibitors have to offer to the growing land defence industry?

From the Middle East:
With over 165 exhibitors from across the Middle East and Africa, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, South Africa and Jordan, the Middle East is expected to make some of the major purchases at IDEX 2011. It is however, clear that they are not falling short on supply offerings also.

From the UAE we will see a strong showing by Tawazun, the headline sponsor of IDEX, a government-owned company designed to diversify the national economy into a wide range of industrial and commercial ventures. Subsidiaries of Tawazun such as Caracal International, the first arms manufacturer in the country, and Tawazun Advanced Defence Systems will have a significant presence at the event.

In 2009, Caracal unveiled the innovative SC Sub-Compact 9mm at IDEX. The gun has sold well as a primary weapon for government professionals who must conceal a handgun for job-related situations and as a secondary back up pistol. In addition to continued sales for their existing product line, we are likely to see more exciting new offerings from this emerging company.

Jordanian Company Jordan Light Vehicle Manufacturing (JLVM) will be exhibiting its range of light combat and transport vehicles. Established in 2003 as a joint venture between King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) and the United Kingdom’s Jankel Group, JLVM provides a line of military products specifically tailored to the needs of the region’s climates and landscapes.

From Asia:
Over 60 companies are exhibiting from Asia. With representation from countries including China, India, Korea, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and products ranging from, personal defence products to full defence service offerings.

The Indian defence heavyweight Integrated Defence Products LLC will be bringing along their strong brands of advanced ballistic materials. With consistent innovation in armour, hard armour, ballistic shields and bomb disposal units, IDP has evolved over the past five decades into a leading manufacturer of defence related products. IDP now has a strong market share within the Indian military forces and abroad.

For Chinese company Poly Technologies, this will be their fourth consecutive IDEX participation. As a state supervised organisation directed towards advancing the Chinese military infrastructure, Poly Technologies is sure to present the latest generation of land defence military hardware that their nation has to offer.

From Europe:
We will see some of the world’s top companies in military arms, vehicle and technology production presenting their lines of industry-leading products and innovative new technologies. FN Herstal of Belgium, Sig Sauer and Rheinmetall AG of Germany, Land Rover and Marshal Land Systems of the UK, Thales of France and the Swiss RUAG Defence are just a selection of the 425+ organisations from the region that have confirmed their attendance.

FN Herstal, part of the Herstal Group that is known globally under the brands FN Herstal, Browning and Winchester and Herstal Group designs will be presenting their industry-leading military firearms. In addition, they will likely bring along their innovative ‘less-lethal technology’, a critical addition to 21st century militaries.
Sig Sauer and Rheinmetall AG, both of which signed major deals with UAE forces during the 2009 exhibition, will be returning with newer, more advanced firearms and integrated defence technologies. A notable addition from Sig will be the P290 polymer sub-compact 9MM. The P290 will be a potentially useful addition for armed forces and police units as a backup weapon from the world’s leading manufacturer of commercial, law enforcement, and military firearms. However, the weapon is likely to find competition from the well-reviewed Caracal SC Semi Automatic sub-compact that premiered at IDEX 2009.
Rheinmetall AG’s Network Centric Warfare (NCW) architecture is another notable advancement from the German front. NCW ensures the fluid exchange of information between teams of military vehicles in combat. This allows operating vehicles to stay in constant contact with each other, digitally exchanging mission relevant data to identify targets and generate fire control data.

Taking a break from their record-setting victories at the Dakar Championship, Russian company Kamaz has also confirmed a space at IDEX 2011. They will be bringing along their line of military trucks that continue to prove to be some of the most robust and reliable in the world.
From the UK, Marshall land systems will be representing some of the world’s most advanced unmanned ground vehicles as well as a wide range of communications equipment. Marshall’s products range from a 10kg hand-portable platforms to a 25 ton excavator for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) tasks. With skills in protection engineering, EW, ECM and EMC/EMI conflict resolution, Marshall SDG may even use IDEX as an opportunity to unveil new advances.

From The Americas:
Nearly all of the heavy hitters from the land defence industry in the Americas will be represented at the 2011 IDEX exposition. While the majority of exhibitors will be from the USA; Brazil and Canada are well represented by a number of their organisations. General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Daimler Trucks and Rockwell Collins are amongst the 110+ organisations already confirmed from this region.

Having historically forged large deals with UAE forces at IDEX, General Dynamics (GD) will be a strong exhibitor at the event this year. As a global leader in producing, supporting and sustaining land and expeditionary combat systems, GD presents a strong range of defence hardware including light and heavy combat vehicles, advanced armour systems and industry-leading ammunition and ordinance.

Among Northrop Grumman’s cutting-edge product line are their geospatial intelligence architectures. With advanced applications in intelligence gathering and mission planning as well as routing, logistics and execution monitoring, variations of these systems could be in-demand for growing military infrastructures in the region. The potential competition between Northrop Grumman and Rheinmetall AG in the area of advanced C2 systems is very much of note, as it would add significant purchasing incentive among interested parties.

Again appearing from Rockwell Collins in this year’s product line is Firestorm, a system enabling coordination between land and air forces in the execution of close combat air strikes. This offering will pair well for both air and land delegations attending the exhibition.

Commenting on behalf of The Association of the U.S. Army, (AUSA), organiser of the USA Pavilion since 1999, Lieutenant General Roger G. Thompson said: “Over the years we have grown over 300 percent and were honoured in 2007 to be the largest indoor national pavilion. This is a tribute to supportive organisers, the development of a magnificent venue and the Government of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The new facility has given us tremendous opportunities to attract the very best defence companies. Moreover, we have found that this is an ideal event for growing our new-to-market companies to make profitable contact with thousands of interested buyers. We are delighted to be a long time participant and are excited about the upcoming event. IDEX 2011 is the place to be in the Middle East for defence companies providing both products and services.”
